Take Care of Yourself: Because You’re In This Too

When your partner is going through fertility treatment, your own needs can feel like the last thing that matters. But treatment can last months or years. Running on fumes that long wears anyone down, and your health counts too.

One thing to know

Looking after yourself isn’t selfish, and it doesn’t need a reason. You’re going through this too, and you deserve some care along the way.

What it can look like

Running on empty during treatment can show up as:

  • Poor sleep, or relying on caffeine to get through the day

  • Workouts, hobbies and nights out quietly disappearing

  • A drink at night becoming the main way to unwind

  • A shorter fuse at work or at home

  • Getting sick more often or feeling run-down

  • Not remembering the last time you did something just for you

Sometimes she may notice you're worn out before you do, and worry about you on top of everything else.

7 ways to look after yourself

1. Protect your sleep
Poor sleep makes everything harder, from patience to mood to how you handle bad news. Keep regular hours as best you can, even in the hard weeks.

2. Move every day
A walk, a run, the gym, a game of pickup. Regular movement is one of the most reliable ways to take the edge off stress. It doesn't have to be intense to help.

3. Go easy on alcohol
It's tempting to unwind with a few drinks. But alcohol disrupts sleep, can make low moods worse, and heavy drinking can affect sperm. Cutting back helps on every front.

4. Keep one thing yours
A hobby, a game, a team. Protect a little time each week that isn’t about treatment. It keeps you feeling like yourself, and that helps you keep showing up.

5. See your friends
You don't have to talk about treatment. Just show up for the poker night, the game or the beer. Staying connected matters, even when you don't share what's going on.

6. Set a search cutoff
Late-night forum reading and success-rate deep dives rarely make anyone feel better. Pick a cutoff time, like 9 p.m., and stick to it.

7. Check in on yourself
If you've felt low, numb or on edge for weeks, see your doctor or a counselor. Partners get overlooked in fertility care, but your mental health matters too.

Try this today

Pick one thing for this week, like a walk three mornings, and put it in your calendar now.

The bottom line

You count in this too. Sleep, movement, friends and a few things that are just yours will help you get through the long haul in one piece.
