Appointments: showing up when it counts
Fertility treatment runs on appointments. Early-morning monitoring, blood draws, ultrasounds, consults, procedures, and phone calls with results. She has to be at every one. You don't, and between work and everything else, you probably can't be. But some of them matter far more than others, and being there for those tells her she isn't doing this by herself.
One thing to know: You don't have to make every appointment. You do need to know which ones matter most to her, and her list might surprise you. Ask her instead of guessing.
Which ones usually matter most
The first consultation, and any visit where a plan gets decided
Egg retrieval, when she'll be sedated and need someone to take her home
Embryo transfer
Any appointment where results or hard news are expected
The pregnancy test and early ultrasounds
The follow-up after a failed cycle or a loss
Routine monitoring visits are often fine to miss, but check with her first.
What helps
1. Ask which ones she wants you at
At the start of each cycle, go through the calendar together. Some people want company at every blood draw. Others only care about the big days.
2. Protect the time
Block your calendar as soon as you know the dates. Retrieval and transfer days can shift with little notice, so keep that week flexible and give your workplace a heads-up if you can.
3. Be the note-taker
She's the one on the exam table, taking in a lot at once. Write down the numbers, doses, and next steps. Keep a running list of questions between visits and bring it with you.
4. Ask your own questions
Speaking up shows you're invested and shares the mental work of keeping track. Let her take the lead on anything about her body.
5. Handle the logistics
Drive, park, check in, deal with the payment, and stop at the pharmacy on the way home. For retrieval, take the whole day off and have food and the couch ready.
6. Be present in the room
Keep your phone in your pocket and stay off work email in the waiting room. If she wants her hand held during the ultrasound or the transfer, hold it.
7. Show up even when you can't be there
Text her before she goes in, and ask her to call you when she's out. Join consults by phone or video if the clinic allows it. That evening, ask how it went and what comes next.
What to say
"Which appointments do you most want me at this cycle?"
"I can't make Thursday. Call me the minute you're out?"
"I wrote down everything the doctor said. We can go over it tonight."
The bottom line
She can't skip any of it. You can choose to be there for the days that count and stay connected to the ones you miss. Knowing the schedule, asking about every visit, and showing up for the big moments tells her this is your treatment too.
